Friday September 3rd 2021 was a showcase of the brilliant developments, products and solutions from our TfWL Cohort 3 start-ups.

Our virtual demo day event was the culmination of our cohort 3 innovation accelerator, which ran in partnership between Transport for Wales Rail (TfWR) and a team of innovation experts powering TfWL, Alt Labs.

This accelerator helped the start-ups involved to develop a solution, capable of improving Welsh rail, and to win a contract of work with TfWR.

Of the 5 startups that took part, 4 progressed into commercial discussions with Transport for Wales Rail.

In this post we’re going to break down each of these brilliant startups and what they achieved over the programme.

Introducing the winner…

RoboK Vision was crowned winner of the programme, securing a contract with TfW.

RoboK Vision build efficient AI-based computer vision solutions to democratise safety in transportation. During our Innovation Accelerator Programme RoboK developed a proof-of-concept in an agile way and gained access to the wealth of product and commercial experiences within TfWR. Their goal was to understand user behaviour at railway crossings by offering an efficient vision based analytics software solution to allow TfW to; Unlock real user behaviour, Perform informed and targeted measures and allow continuous improvement with portable and repeatable deployment.

A further 4 start-up’s have progressed into commercial discussions with Transport for Wales Rail.

Quinean Systems –

Quinean Systems offer a low-code machine learning platform that allows domain experts to deploy digital twins, test hypotheses and optimise outcomes at speed. They worked alongside the control, production and performance team at TfW to help them optimise the allocation and planning of resources, helping to improve the decisions they make in response to unforeseen events and customer experiences.

JNCTION -- 

During demo day JNCTION pitched their app Aubin, a new journey planner app designed with the autistic community, for the autistic community. They demonstrated the passenger benefits to using Aubin, including; easier access to the public transport network, reduced anxiety and improved confidence. They also showcased how by using the app, TfW will be able to continuously improve their customer proposition.

Utility AR –

Utility AR work with innovators in industrial sectors like Manufacturing, Pharmaceuticals, Utilities, and Data Centres to unlock the potential of Augmented Reality applications. During our live demo day Utility AR demonstrated how their solution can allow TfW to overcome their challenges by using augmented reality training solutions.

Stofl –  

Stofl provided the ability to identify the pain points of monitoring air quality on trains and stations to help travel return to normal and justify the switch to more modern and cleaner rolling stock. They were able to prototype and demo their battery powered, LoRaWAN air quality monitor in just 10 weeks!
